Life, Earth, People
We will grow our local food, if we give the Earth rights . We will treasure our water and land, if we give the Earth rights. We will end globalisation and imported exploitation, if we give the Earth rights. In Washington, we are incredibly lucky. We live in a land of mountains, sea, bountiful salmon, apples, rain, cold freshwater lakes, and trees. We should value it.
The machine is going up in smoke, we breathe it every summer. Now it's a fact we cannot ignore. Capitalism makes us consume more and more. It powers an economy designed to destroy our own homes. Unmitigated capitalism has brought unmitigated disasters of wildfire, drought, poverty, melting glaciers, and rising seas. The system must change and change now it will. We change the system to give back and tend the Earth when we take from it. We hold the technocratic elite accountable for the destruction consumerism causes. We create a society that prospers now and in the future. We're taking control of the future now.
ANY SYSTEM REQUIRING INFINITE GROWTH WILL BREAK. THIS ONE IS BREAKING NOW.

Environmental policies in Washington are decreed by politicians, not scientists, and center on one agency, the department of Ecology, to enforce and manage environmental breakdown using top-down strong arming. This is not a wise approach. These regulations hurt small businesses while corporations can afford to skirt the law. Worse, no single policy fits our entire diverse state. Giving the Earth rights allows for distributed decisions by the people effected, not demands from politicians.
We have automated much of manual labor. We are rapidly automating knowledge work. Future jobs that embrace technology as a pillar of engineering prosperous society must have robust training and education that nimbly adapts to realities of artificial intelligence and automation. But a prosperous society will have much need for workers to strengthen our infrastructure and energy.
Mega corporations, not individuals, are destroying the Earth. 70% of total global emissions come from just 100 companies. These Mega-Corps have rights while the Earth does not. They are busy buying mega yachts to sail around Lake Washington while wildfires rage. This is unacceptable and cannot be addressed with evaded taxes and carbon markets. It requires changing the rules of the game.
Giving the Earth rights will bring back a resilient, local Washington economy. Why do we export apples, yet you still go to a supermarket and find apples imported from New Zealand? Local business is ecological and logical, and giving the Earth rights allows Washington creators and innovators to fight back.
Washington has abundance: water, forests, food. Yet our ecosystems are being hit hard. The backbone of our state, our agriculture, is hit hard by drought and heat. Cities are becoming heat islands and treeless concrete pits. Our snowpack — the source of our precious fresh water and hydropower — is depleting at unprecedented rates. Our salmon are dying. The world is threatened by far more than just climate change. Giving the Earth rights lets Washingtonians protect and value the natural resources of our state.
Giving rights to the Earth will change our way of living. We will give up our habits of overconsumption. We will forgo daily Amazon deliveries and traffic clogged highways. But our kids will have food and water and a beautiful home and the opportunity to live. That matters.
Giving the Earth rights has modern and historical precedent: Native Americans considered ecosystems and the Earth as living for centuries, more recently Ecuador’s constitution contains legal recognition of the Earth’s rights, while New Zealand has given rights to forests and rivers. We all want to protect life around us. But we need a legal weapon to fight destruction.
The economy demands ever-increasing economic value to fund new business ventures. If you ask me for money, I expect more money in return or I will not lend you my money.
This infinite growth principle is the foundation of capitalism. It creates a world where we must spend more and more, consume more and more, exploit more and more.
Well it doesn’t work anymore.
